Key rules

  • Cyrillic е is written «ye» at the start of a word and after vowels, otherwise «e».
  • ц is «ts» after vowels, otherwise «s»: лицей → litsey, цирк → sirk.
  • ъ is written with the tutuq ʼ: маъно → maʼno. ь is dropped: медаль → medal.
  • The new alphabet writes «sh», «ch», «oʻ», «gʻ» as single letters: Ş, Ç, Ö, Ğ.
  • Current Latin puts a tutuq between s and h when read separately: Isʼhoq. The new alphabet writes Ishoq.
